Why storage decides bond quality
Filled PTFE sheet is soft, holds its shape only while it is supported, and picks up contamination easily. Most bonding problems we see on site start before the adhesive is even opened: a sheet left standing on its edge, a roll kept in a cold workshop overnight, or a machined face handled with oily gloves.
The material does not need special treatment. It needs to stay flat, clean and at a stable temperature until the moment it goes onto the prepared way surface.
Storage rules that actually matter
- Keep sheets flat on a full-width support, never leaning on an edge or a corner
- Store below 40 C and out of direct sunlight, away from doors that cycle hot and cold every day
- Keep the original interleaf or a clean board between stacked sheets
- Store away from cutting, grinding and painting areas, because airborne grit embeds in PTFE
- Never stack steel plate or tooling on top of a sheet
Handling and inspection before bonding
Lift or unroll the sheet with two people and support it along its length. Bending a thick sheet sharply leaves a permanent set that no amount of clamping will press flat.
Before cutting, check the bonding face for contamination, handling marks and edge damage. Wipe with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. If your adhesive supplier specifies a solvent wipe, follow their procedure and let it flash off completely.
Matching sheet size to the job
Order the width you can bond in one pass. A joint across the middle of a loaded way is a stress riser: if the machine needs a wider liner than one sheet, plan the joint where load and travel are lowest and keep it away from oil grooves.
Where the design allows trimming after curing, cut oversize by a few millimetres so the edges can be cleaned up square to the way.
Arrival check list
- Thickness at several points with a micrometer, not only at the edges
- Flatness on a surface plate for sheet that will go on precision ways
- No delamination, blisters or embedded grit along the cut edges
- Grade and colour match the drawing or the OEM specification
Quick answers
Does turcite b sheet expire in storage?
The sheet has no short shelf life when it is kept flat, clean and out of sunlight. The adhesive does: check the batch date on the epoxy and do not use it past the stated shelf life.
Can I store sheet rolled up?
Only thin grades, and only short term. Thick sheet takes a permanent set when rolled tightly, so store it flat and fully supported.
Should the sheet be cleaned before bonding?
Yes. Dry and lint-free first, then the solvent and procedure your adhesive supplier specifies, fully evaporated before epoxy is applied.
